spacer Monster Tench - Simon Ashton   11 JUNE 2011

Arriving on the saturday morning for the planned weeks session I set about finding a clear spot in the swim I thought might yeild a few carp and most importantly a specimen tench . I setup in summer bay where I was told a good number of carp had showed the day before, my thinking was that if the carp were shoaled up there the tench wouldnt be to far behind waiting to nick their eggs when they started spawning.

The swim was chocked with weed after about three rod lengths out so the margin was the only safe option. To my left there was about five feet with clean gravel against the reeds so this was where the carp rods were cast. One on a chod rig with a 11mm oily floater and the other with a crab & Crayfish 15mm boilie. Hemp, 4mm s-pellets and some hemp and hali groundbait was used to prime the swims.

On the tench rods I fed the same plus about two pints of dead red maggots flavoured with the liquid pineapple. These were fished with maggot feeders with fake casters and maggots and cast about 5 feet from the weed.
The first bite came on the chod rig and turned out to be a stunning carp of 34lb 140z then about an hour later the other carp rod went resulting in anopther of 18lbs. That was it for the next 48 hours so I deCided to move swims to where the tench had previously been showing on a point swim just round the corner.

I fished the next 5 days catching a number of carp and tench to 8lbs 2oz and carp to 27lbs 140z. On the day before I was due to leave one of the tench rods screamed off this time  amy my other half muscled in on the action taking a monster double of 10lbs 1oz! we were totally stunned to say the least......these rods were fished the same but at 25 yards out in clear areas with the reels locked up. All the rigs were pinned down with back leads and flying backleads above the lead core and the feeders were fished inline with small hook links of about 6 inch.
