When I Was younger I always looked forward to the fishing trips with my father, we often went to such places as Upton Dyke, Horning or Buckenham Ferry, always great days often with my brother and sisters and memories of some great days and great catches. Those days always ended up in a pub somewhere so father could have a pint or two of his favourite mild and me a bag of crisps and a shandy. Oh such happy days.

I hadn’t visited Buckenham Ferry on the River Yare for many years, deep in the heart of Broadland it’s a fantastic place to fish and the ever popular Beauchamp Arms match length on the opposite bank to Buckenham continues to produce brilliant weights.
It doesn’t get any simpler really, a ground bait feeder and size 14 hook with a couple of red maggots. Knowing full well some bream could show up I also had a bag of worms with me and a couple of pints of casters to introduce through the feeder.
I needed a sticky groundbait that could carry the casters in the feeder into the deep swim and once there remain in place and not get carried away in the heavy flow. I opted to try the new Sonubaits Dutch master Gold Mix, mixed half an hour or so before fishing it looked and smelt the part, nice an sticky with not too much feed but enough flavour to attract and hold plenty of fish.
The first few casts produced plenty of plucks and pulls but only a couple of small roach and a perch to show for our efforts. Still confident I carried on with the routine of plugging a few casters with the groundbait mix and casting as accurate as possible to my chosen spot. The switch to a piece of worm on the hook signaled the first bream of the day and from that point on the fish just kept on coming with plenty of good sized skimmers and an odd better specimen amongst them.
I packed in just before dark and was quite surprised just how many fish I had landed in the 5 or 6 hours I had fished the keep-net took plenty of effort to lift and juggle as I returned an estimated 40lb of Broadlands finest.
The trip brought back plenty of memories and I will be going back again over the next few weeks to catch myself a few more, with some plans to try to find some of the bigger bream, without doubt I will make sure I have a couple of bags of Dutch Gold with me that’s for sure.
