spacer Time for a Catch up - Duncan Charman   18 MAY 2011

Monday – Having very few commitments this week, l have been looking forward to catching up on some of the lost time fishing over the past few weeks due to one thing and another.

Heading back south l was hoping to get into my favourite bream swim as the wind had swung to the south west and luckily it was free. Bait launching eighty balls of Sonubaits groundbait, laced with pellets and corn some sixty-five yard l soon started getting the odd liner and as darkness fell my first bream fell, weighing 11lb 3oz. One more of 11lb followed up until midnight, however the red-letter session l was hoping for seemed as if it wasn’t going to be.

Tuesday – Midnight came and went, then at 1-40pm a screamer saw me attached to something heavy which turned out to be a mirror of 28lb 5oz. Dawn started to break when another bite developed which was the start of a hectic couple of hours in which a further six bream graced my net, including two more doubles of 10lb 1oz and 12lb 9oz.

After catching the big eel a few weeks back from Badshot Lea Pond l returned with my brother to see if any more might show. Kevin fished for cats with big bunches of worms, taking five including a new best weighing 25lb 8oz whilst my tuned down approach with two lobs in the margins only attracted a small cat, one tench and two perch.

Wednesdays – Having had very little action overnight l enjoyed a good nights sleep under the stars and slowly packed up in the early hours.

Thursday – Back at the bream lake l dropped once again into the same swim and having baited heavily on Monday evening as well as Tuesday morning before leaving l was sure of a result. Fish were moving all around, however no bream showed just three carp to 19lb up until midnight.

Friday – At 1-20pm l was awoken by a screamer and after a slow, heavy fight, thought I’d put the net under a thirty, but she fell short going 27lb 10oz, the thirty will come! After this the swim died and no more runs came, so I will try and return tonight and drop into a different area.

After a few hours in the office, l managed to get back to the lake before the 5pm rush and luckily dropped into a swim on the opposite bank, one that’s rarely free. Without a high bank behind l was able to cast further, around 75 yards and dropped all three rods at the same distance over around seventy balls of ground bait. Liners usually start from 7pm, however things were quiet until 10pm when after just landing a carp of 20lb 8oz another run occurred resulting in another carp of 18lb 3oz. With two landing nets l was able to get a photo of both on the mat, yet my thoughts were on the whereabouts of the bream.

Saturday – At 1pm another run produced a long double figured common before things once again went quite until 5-30am when a small bream renewed some confidence. Two more followed, once again at the same time before a rare tench around 5lb signalled time to leave.
