Have any regular Sonubaits blog readers tried the company's new Spicy Method Match Mix yet? For anyone who hasn’t seen this new groundbait yet, the Spicy Meaty Method Mix is a blend of spices, pellets and fishmeal extracts, which turns a bright red colour when wetted. And my lord, it pongs, too!
I decided to give it a go, just to do something different, on an evening match at Orrell Water Park, near Wigan - and I'm pleased to report that I won the competition with a tidy 19lb weight of skimmer bream.
Fishing the pole, I fed this groundbait, which has a really strong aroma, putting in three balls at the start, one of which was really hard, one which was a medium wetness and one really dry.
I presented two tiny pieces of luncheon meat on a size 18 PR32 hook, under a 4 x 14 PB Inter 3 pole float, set four inches overdepth in five-and-a-half feet of water. The shotting pattern was a simple bulk with a couple of number nines as droppers because I like to fish quite positively when targeting skimmers.
The groundbait seemed to pull skimmers into the peg from the word go, and I must have had 25 to 30 fish, averaging around 8oz apiece, for my winning weight.
I also tried the Spicy Meaty Method Mix on a carp match at Bannister House Fishery and I would have won the match - had it not been for a bad snag in my peg that cost me a lot of fish.
It seemed that the carp were going crackers to get to this particular groundbait, which I was fishing on a Method feeder in very shallow water. At one stage I caught 10 carp in eight minutes but the snag put paid to my chances of a victory.
Try Sonu Spicy Meaty Method Mix - it stinks to high heaven but the fish don't seem to mind at all!
