spacer Baiting the Swim at Night   1 SEPTEMBER 2008
spacer spacer spacer

Something I have done for a long time is to keep the bait topped up in the swim even if it is the middle of the night. I am sure over the years this has accounted for many fish that I might otherwise have never caught.

To do this you have to be well organised with your baiting up. Each rod I fish with will have a pole elastic marker just passed the tip ring making clipping up and re-casting easy.

As I bait up each rod I tie a corresponding marker knot onto the spod rod using different colour elastic to mark each spot. As long as you have your spots lined up on the horizon spoding at night is easy.

On a recent bream fishing session I had baited fairly heavily on arrival and in the night I had a couple of runs which turned out to be small tench. You can usually guarantee that if you get a couple of pickups off your baited area that most of the bait will have gone. At 2.30am I spent about half an hour re-baiting the swim with the spod and at 7am I was rewarded with a superb bream of 13.11.

If I had not re-baited in the night would I have caught the bream? I am convinced it makes all the difference.
