The months of December, January and February are when sweetcorn comes into its own on commercial fisheries.
The cold, clear water is the key to using corn, which is a superb, visual bait. Carp love it but a word of warning, don't go mad feeding it as I can usually get through a day by using no more than an eighth of a tin.
For side-hooking corn I use a Preston PR32 hook, and for multiple pieces on a hair-rig set-up, I use the well-established PR36, with its out-turned eye.
Corn does need to be fed sparingly and a good way to do it is to use it in PVA bags.
I will feed up to eight pieces of corn in a tiny bag, but make sure you dry the grains before putting them into the bag-making funnel. I use kitchen towel to drey the corn sufficiently to be able to make up a bag.
Another great tip is to try using just the skin of the corn, squeezing the middle part out.
The carp find it easier to hoover a corn skin up into their mouth than a denser, heavier full piece.
One more tip worth trying is freezing some corn, and thawing it again, before a fishing trip. The freezing and thawing actions soften the corn quite markedly, and again, a soft bait can make all the difference on a day when bites are at a premium.
Give my tips a try and catch a few fish this winter!
