With the 16th of June now passed it meant that the ponds at Frensham would now be open. I decided to miss the first couple of days, as I knew they would be very busy. I arrived late Saturday afternoon and on my way to the lake I wondered if I would be able to get a swim. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to find only a couple of anglers fishing. I couldn’t quite believe my luck.
After setting up in my favourite swim I was spodding out a tin of Sonubaits Hemp N Corn around 30 yards out. Wading out I cast my first rod out and I didn’t get a chance to get back to the bank before the line had tightened in my hand and the first fish of the session was hooked. This is how the session carried on I had intended to do the night but felt shattered with all the action. If I wasn’t casting then I was playing fish or tying new rigs. The action really was that frantic.
By the end of the session I caught 6 Rudd weighing over the magical 2lb barrier (2lb 1oz, 2lb 2oz, 2lb 2oz, 2lb 3oz, 2lb 5oz and 2lb 6oz). The tench soon moved in and I caught 17 before calling it a day. A great session and I couldn’t wait to get back.
In the middle of the week I headed for two quick overnight trips in search of my first big eel. After my first bite resulted in a dropped run, my second chance screamed off and on picking up the rod I was left surprised by the power of these species and resulted in my first proper eel weighing 4lb 10oz.
On Friday evening I returned to Frensham in the hope of more Rudd. I had heard it had been fairly tough going in the week. As last time I spodded out a generous amount of Sonubaits Hemp N Corn. Friday evening brought lots of small Rudd with one good fish putting in an appearance weighing 2lb 2oz.
Saturday evening was a different story and the big fish put in a short appearance. In four casts I landed a perch weighing 2lb 4oz and Rudd weighing 2lb 4oz, 2lb 5oz and 2lb 6oz.
A great week which produced 10 Rudd weighing over 2lbs. I hope for a bigger one in the coming weeks.
