Many Sonu blog readers will know that I love to experiment with all manner of baits and tackle ideas - and one of my latest brainwaves, using Sonu Baits' Match Method Mix as a paste on the pole - helped me bag a 90lb carp weight for second place on a match.
The venue was the increasingly popular Five Ways Lakes, near Wolvey in Warwickshire, where the Match lake has 60 pegs and a Specimen Lake can also handle a lot of anglers.
While I have been catching an awful lot of fish on the excellent new Sonu Baits One to One Paste, I decided to try using Sonu Match Method Mix as a paste after drawing peg 49 on the Match Lake.
The trick to make a good paste from Sonu Match Method Mix is to slowly keep adding water and agitating the mix. This releases the oils in the groundbait, which makes it very sloppy but also very sticky.
This means you can fish with a big lump of it on a paste set-up, using a pot to cup the paste into the right spot in your peg.
I use one of the Preston self-cocking paste floats which I find spot-on, and the hook I prefer is a Preston Innovations PR36 in a size 10. At this time of year when carp to 10lb plus are feeding hard in the margins, I like to use 0.17mm diameter Preston Powerline, with a 17H Preston Hollo elastic and a Preston Pulla Kit. It is a real 'take-no-prisoners' set-up and you would be amazed at just how quickly you can land carp averaging 1lb 8oz to 2lb with this sort of gear.
Why not try my Sonubaits Match Method Mix paste trick - it's definitely worth a few extra fish on venues where they have seen everything else!
