I’ve been experimenting recently with groundbait mixes and I am a real fan of mixing Sonubaits’ Supercrush with F1 groundbait to create a killer Method mix.
I put this mix through its paces on a match at the prolific Bannister House Lakes complex near Southport, and was fortunate enough to finish second.
I hadn’t planned on fishing the Method feeder but the weather dictated what to do, as it was blowing a gale, and you couldn’t fish the pole effectively. I had drawn a peg where I could cast into an empty corner, a chuck of some 35 yards.
So I set up a Preston C Series 12ft feeder rod, teamed with a Preston PXR 4000 reel loaded with 5lb Direct Mono.
The feeder was one of the large-sized Preston Speed Mould feeders, a 15 gram version, and I banded an 8mm Soft Match Hooker pellet, using a size 16 PR36 eyed hook, which is the business for knotless knot hair-rig set-ups. A short hooklength of four inches was all I needed, made up using 0.19mm Powerline.
I mixed the groundbait on the bank, because, like I said, it was a snap decision governed by the weather conditions. Ideally, I like to mix a Method groundbait mix the night before, but as long as you take your time, you can create a good mix. What I like about a 50-50 mix of Supercrush and F1 groundbait is that it sticks to the Method frame well, but also comes off it well, once in the water.
I ended up with just shy of 60lbs, and had I not bullied four carp which came off at the net, I would have won the match, but that’s match fishing. There are fine margins between success and failure.
