Arriving at Frensham Friday evening after work I was a little bit unsure whether I had made the right choice. Things had slowed up a little over the last couple of days as the first of the cold weather had begun. I caught a couple of Rudd to 1lb 12oz before packing away. I couldn’t stop thinking about the roach lake.
On returning home I sorted out all my kit and loaded fresh line onto my reels. I rigged up three Korum Precision Multi Feeder rods, which I knew would be perfect for the job if I was lucky enough to hook a big roach. The maize was again removed from the maggots and I added a healthy amount of Sonubaits Supercrush Green to give them an extra boost. This had worked really well on Frensham and my confidence was high. By the time I had tea it was gone midnight and after 4 hours sleep the alarm went off and I was soon on my way.
Arriving at the lake before dawn I had a quick walk around and was astonished to find only a couple of anglers in residence. After selecting a swim I soon had three rods cast out and it was time to set up camp. I regularly recast the feeders all day without any reaction. Dusk was looming and I had a text from good mate Dai Gribble that read ‘Bite time’. He wasn’t wrong and only 30 minutes after receiving his text I had a bite on my left hand rod. I played the fish gingerly as I knew it was likely I was connected to a new personal best. After coaxing the fish out of the weed I soon netted a big roach, which weighed 2lb 10oz. A new personal best!
After getting the photo’s done I quickly recast the rod back to the area and only 20 minutes later and my middle rod received a bite as a shoal of roach had obviously found the bait. The fish came in very easily and it wasn’t until my head torch illuminated the fish in the clear water that I knew I was connected to a very special fish. Luckily I lifted the net around it and in the bottom of the mesh was a massive roach. I couldn’t quite believe what I was looking at. Placing the fish on the mat it looked very big and when the scales read 3lb 5oz I was in a state of shock. I carried on through the night and the rest of the following day without any more action. Maggots covered in Sonubaits Supercrush Green doing the doing the business yet again.
