spacer The Perfect Pole Rig For Fin Perfect Expander Pellets - Tommy Pickering   16 MARCH 2009
spacer spacer spacer

A lot of anglers ask me all sorts of questions about fishing with expander pellets on the pole, and I'm going to detail the perfect rig for use in conjunction with Sonu Fin Perfect expanders.

Let's start with the expanders, as many folk have all manner of problems getting them just right for the hook. My advice would be to do them at home the night before the fishing session.
I take a quantity of expanders and put them in my pump and add water straight from the tap. I leave them in the pump, under pressure, for about 30 seconds, so that they take on some water but are still firm in the middle.
I then release the valve, drain off the water and put the expanders into a bait tub. I then add just a tiny amount of water - not enough to cover them, but just so that they can draw in extra moisture. The tub is then placed in the bottom of the fridge overnight, with the lid on, and the pellets will be perfect next day when I get to my peg.
Now to the rig. Firstly, a lot of newcomers to pellet fishing give up almost as soon as they have started, because they can't hit the bites. The chief cause of missing bites is that anglers have too much line between the pole tip and the float, and because anglers try to strike as they would at bites on baits such as maggot or pinkie.
The answer is to have a short line. In winter and spring I'd go for between 9 inches and a foot of line between pole tip and float. When the float goes under you need to apply a firm but short lift of only a couple of inches to set the hook.
It takes some practice but once you get into the groove you'll be amazed at how many fish you catch with expander pellets.
Now, the rig depends on the depth of water, but in say up to five feet of water I will use on of the new Inter 1s, from the Des Shipp range. This has a slim body and a carbon stem with a sensible by sensitive bristle. If the peg is more than five feet deep I will opt for an Inter2 pole float, which offers slightly more stability. Main line tends to be 0.13mm or 0.15mm Powerline, with hooklengths either 0.10mm or 0.11mm Powerline, in winter and spring.
The shotting pattern is simple and is governed by the fact I always fish with a 15 centrimetre hook-length. The first Stotz, a no 10, is positioned immediately above the loops joining the mainline to hook-length. A second dropper, again a No.10 Stotz,  is pinched on the line 15 cms above the bottom dropper. Finally, I positioned the rest of the Stotz in a bulk, 20 cms above that.
Presentation is the crucial thing with expander pellets. Rather than lay the rig in sideways, you should lower the rig in vertically, with the rig directly under the pole tip. As I lower the rig, I hold the float a few inches above the surface for 10 seconds, to ensure I have a vertical drop, before finally lowering the float in.
The next bit of the fishing equation all depends on the day. Is it a day when you have to leave the float in the water and lert the fish come to the bait, or is it a day when lifting and dropping entices the fish to bite?
Often, especially when targeting F1s, you get bites lifting and dropping, whereas bream can prefer the rig to fish itself. It's for you to experiment.
Elastics are another key area, as are hooks. I tend to choose hooks according to elastic strength, rather than baits. For example, if I were fishing with a PR 24 or a PR32 in a size 20 or 18, I would normally use a Preston 9H Hollo. If I was using a size 18 or a 16, it would be an 11H elastic, and if I was looking at a 16 then I would use the 13H elastic.
Finally, a word about micro pellets for feeding. I'ma  big fan of the 2mm Fin Perfect feed pellets. Here's how I prepare them. Again, I do mine the night before a session.
Get a two-pint bait tub and pour a pint of pellets into the tub. Then carefully add water from the tap so the pellets are just covered. Now leave the pellets in the bottom of the fridge overnight.
In the morning give the tub a shake to separate them and have a look. You are left with lovely, fluffed up 2mm pellets that look like mini-expanders. Feed these, little and often, on a pole pot on the tip of your pole.
Give my simple expander pellet pole rig and presentation ideas a try. You will see your fishing results improve - I promise.
