A week later and I was still in a state of shock regarding the big roach I had caught.  The weather was still very cold and there was only one place I had on my mind.  Over the last few months I had really been getting into my big fish angling and with the last two bites bringing a 4lb 1oz perch and a 3lb 8oz roach I was keen to keep the roll going.  Thursday evening it was off to the tackle shop on my way home from work.  Leaving with two pints of white maggots minus any maize or dust.  Once I had got back home I covered them in a generous amount of Sonubaits Super Crush Green Groundbait.

Friday evening I battled my way through the rush hour traffic on my way to Oxford in search of roach.  I arrived at the fishery around 7.30pm and again I had the venue to myself.  I quickly had my gear in the same swim as the week before.  I followed the same routine and had three rods out to the same spots.  The night passed quietly which I expected.  Saturday morning and the first bite came out of the blue and I was soon holding a 2lb 14oz roach for the camera.  The rest of the day passed uneventfully and the night was forecast to be a cold one.

I awoke the next day and half the lake was frozen and I had to break the ice around my rods to get them back.  This task to me over an hour and I was tempted to head off home.   I decided to give it the day as I still had a sneaky feeling that there was still a small chance of another bite.  Using a heavy lead I made a wide enough channel through the ice to be able to get three rods back out to the area I had been fishing.

Late morning the wind got up and the ice drifted down to the far end of the lake.  Just before dusk I had a bite and on lifting the rod the fish felt good.  Once I had gently led the fish back the 50 yards distance I wasn’t disappointed when the fish surfaced in the clear water.  Lifting the mesh around it looked another good fish.  The scales confirmed a weight of 3lb 2oz 8drams.  Supercrush Green yet again doing the business.
