spacer Get On The Barbel With Hemp and Hali Crush!   15 SEPTEMBER 2008
spacer spacer spacer

The autumn is here and it's time to dust off my river gear and target those fighting-fit Wye barbel with SonuBaits' Hemp and Hali Crush.

I use Sonu Hemp and Hali Crush to plug both ends of an open-ended feeder, and depending on the size of the barbel in my peg, 4mm Sonu Halibut Pellets, and Sonu Pellet-Os for hair-rigging, also come into my game plan.
When I know I am going fishing on the Wye, I'm like a kid at Christmas. The night before the session I'm lucky if I sleep for four hours - I can't wait to get on this fabulous river.
This autumn I am fishing in a couple of team series around Belmont and Hereford and when I get on a barbel peg I like to rig up my Preston Innovations 13' 8" Dutch Master feeder rod. I usually use a reel carrying 8lb Korum reel line, and invariably I will tie on a hook-length of 0.21mm Preston Power Line.
The feeder is a Preston open-ended Power Feeder -  and the hook is generally a size 14 Korum S3, carrying three or four red maggots.
For starters, I will put hemp and caster inside the feeder, plugged at each end with Sonu Hemp and Hali Crush, and I will then have a few casts to see what stamp of fish are in my swim.
If the barbel are in the one to three-pound bracket, I will continue to feed hemp and caster.
But if the barbel are in the five to seven-pound range, I will start to feed 4mm Sonu Halibut pellets through the feeder, and switch over to a hair-rigged 10 or 11mm Halibut pellet or one of the superb Pellet-Os.
It's then a case of hanging on as Wye barbel nearly rip the rod out of your hand when they hit the bait.
With Sonu Hemp and Hali Crush as the feeder groundbait, and Sonu Halibut pellets as a feed and for the hook, you are on to a proven winner.
