spacer Huge eel - Duncan Charman   10 AUGUST 2009

The capture of the eel the previous week from a relatively unknown source has captivated my mind and l was eager to return.

Monday night and another late appointment meant very little time to set up, so eels were the obvious choice. Arriving an hour before total darkness gave me just enough time to set up camp in the closest swim to the car park as well as managing to catch a few bait fish.

The unsettled evening seemed perfect and at 10pm a run developed that was unfortunately missed however another three came steadily throughout the night resulting in eels of 3lbs 8oz, 4lbs 10oz and a massive fish of a lifetime 6lbs 11oz!

Tuesday was a social event and the night was spent at the famous Tarn pond with my brother and father, not for the long gone leney carp but a trial for its crucians. The night produced two tench and bream to my marginal rods whilst Kevin managed a double figured carp and what he thought whilst playing a huge crucian. Unfortunately it turned out to be a 4lbs 7oz brown goldfish. Kevin caught the fish on corn taken straight from a Sonubaits tin of Hemp ‘n’ Corn that he loose feed throughout the session.

Thursday and Friday nights were spent back on the eel lake. Moving around and fishing different areas is something l always do, rarely dropping back into a productive swim. With over thirty acres of water to work this will take some time thou. The two new swims didn’t produce apart from a small pike and perch but l felt that it was more down to the atmospheric conditions as on both nights it was almost impossible to catch any bait fish, where else on Monday they were everywhere. The heavy cold showers had also dropped the water temperature and each morning the air temperature fell to just eleven degrees.
