spacer Barbel - A question of Bait   28 AUGUST 2008
spacer spacer spacer

One of the many questions I used to get asked when I was working in Ted Carter’s tackle shop was what bait do I need to catch barbel the answer 10 years or more ago used to be luncheon meat, large beds of hemp, hemp and caster or gallons of maggots.

If someone had asked me 5 years ago my answer would have been slightly different.

I used to catch lots of fish over beds of droppered hemp with either a boilie, a paste or a drilled halibut pellet on the hook.

I was using an open ended feeder with a coarse groundbait and boilies on the hook

Boilies became a greater part of my armoury especially in winter or after dark.

Now

Well the last time I went fishing checked in my bait bag and took stock of what I was using. I was rather shocked – I had no hemp with me, no boilies, no paste, no maggots, no luncheon meat. In fact my bait requirements were covered by bags of various size halibut pellets, a bag of Sonubaits Hemp and Halicrush and different sizes of S-pellets including my personal favourite the Tuff 1’s.

Did I feel disadvantaged, not one bit; it is a fact that on waters where pellets are regularly used the fish find them almost irresistible.

The advantages to me are –

1. No preparation time needed equals more time on the bank

2. The bait stays fresh so again more time to fish

3. I can mix and match baits from what I carry to fit all my current barbel fishing circumstances from tiny pellets and fine hooklengths in clear water to big baits for flooded rivers, from method mixes to PVA bags its all covered.

I do still use meat, boilies and hemp but for the majority of my fishing its pellets all the way.

I wonder what the answer will be in another 5 years, who knows but I have a pretty good idea Sonubaits will have it covered.
