spacer Better Groundbait For Bigger Skimmers   10 APRIL 2008
spacer spacer spacer

Living in Cornwall, I tend to use a little more groundbait in my general fishing and when I am on a venue such as Pollawyn, where the target is bigger skimmers and bream going to around 3lb, an integral part of my mix is Sonubaits’ Fin Perfect Mix 1.

I split it 50-50 with brown crumb and I mix it on the bank, when I get to my peg. I do overwet it though, and as it is the first thing I do on arrival at me peg, it has around an hour or so to soak up the water before the all-in.

About 20 minutes before the match is due to start, I will push the mix through a riddle and I will add a little more water. I then cup this ground bait in, with the addition of some casters, and I find it works a treat for the skimmers.
At Pollwayn you are looking to fish at the bottom of the shelf, which is usually at around 11 metres, where you will find eight feet of water.

I use my Preston GiS12 pole, fitted with a 13H Hollo elastic and the float is invariably a Preston PB15, with an olivette and four number 10 Stotz as droppers. My main line is 0.15mm Preston Powerline, with a 0.11mm Powerline hook length, finished off with a size 18 PR24, if I am fishing with a worm head, double caster or treble maggot. However, if I want to use a hard pellet as hookbait, which is something we do a lot in Cornwall to avoid the attentions of smaller nuisance fish, I will opt for a PR36 is a size 18, with a small latex bait band, lassoed and attached knotless knot style to a hair.
When I plumb up I like to set the float a couple of inches overdepth, and I am happy to allow the float to trip through with the undertow.

I know a lot of people say that to catch bream you must have the hook bait nailed static to the bottom, but I reckon on big reservoirs like Porth and Pollwayn, where there is always a good blow on the water, fish become accustomed to food moving through the water with the tow.

It certainly works for me, at any rate, and I know that using a  float with a slightly thicker bristle than normal means the float doesn’t get dragged under all the time as it trips through. Try my ideas, you'll see your catches improve.
