spacer A Friends Red Letter Day   19 MAY 2008

A mammoth session for me of some 40 hours covering Monday and Tuesday night proved fruitless apart from a lost carp but for my mate Steve he had one of those ‘Red Letter’ days.

Steve hasn’t been fishing for over a year and knowing that he was itching to get out I invited him along to the venue as I knew it was right up his street. I was asked to create a feature for Coarse Fisherman Magazine showing another angler catching and Steve certainly produced the goods on a difficult Cemex Frimley Pit 3. Steve decided to try something different and instead of fishing the know features in front of him decided to drop his rig short, keep his feed tight and build a swim throughout his stay.

Hedging his bets for Bream and Carp Steve decided to create his own feeding area and scolded a few kilo of Sonubaits Hard feed pellets that he compressed around a method lead along with a tutti-frutti 14mm hookbait. Clipping up and casting to get some feed in he created a very tight area of food and as the session progressed took carp of 22lbs 5oz, 28lbs and a personal best common of 32lbs 15oz along with a personal best bream of 12lbs 11oz plus a tench of 6lbs 13oz, wow!

During the stint he took three carp, plus a bream and a tench, which included two personal bests. As you can imagine he’s got the bug again and has already been on the phone trying to arrange the next trip but after bring me back down to earth he will have to wait till next year, only joking!

Thursday the weather took a turn for the worse or maybe better, as the high pressure and hot conditions left, leaving the south covered in cloud, along with seeing a temperature drop from early in the week of some ten degrees. I thought that this change may get the Marsh Farm crucians having it, but although the lake fished better and more fish were rolling I could only manage four crucians, the best 3lbs 6oz plus four tench. Again it was the first hour of darkness that was the most productive and after midnight the lake fell silent.
