spacer Back to Par Fisheries   23 MAY 2008

I had driven back to Brentwood Angling to hastily purchase a day ticket for the back lake at Par Fisheries, and couldn't wait to get back to the lake and knew exactly where I needed to head for.

Back in the car park I loaded the barrow in record time and shot off to where I hoped the fish would still be. The wind was still pushing hard into one corner, turning the water a milky colour, and every now and then a ghostly shape would appear and waddle down the margin, but always returning and dipping down after a few minutes. There are around 40 known fish in the lake and it looked like most of them were in front of me!!!

Rigs were baited and some Sonubaits Halibut Paste Pellet was moulded around the hookbait, and finished off with a small stick filled with a 50/50 blend of Hemp & Hali Crush and the Exploding Fishmeal mix.

Carefully I threw a few pellets over the feeding fish to hopefully move them just enough to allow a moment to lower the two rigs into place, having done that a further handful of Carp Feed Pellets finished the traps and the rods were laid on the grass with slackened clutches.

To hedge my bets I thought it was worth putting out a few big expanders out and to see if they would attract any attention as the fish were moving just under the surface on the end of the wind. A few were being taken when my right hand rod absolutely melted off.

The fish tore off up the lake and the strangest fight I have known ensued. I can't remember a fish to shaking its head so violently throughout a fight, it was like playing a huge Roach!!! Anyway, the fish was in open water now, and so without any dramas she soon slipped over the drawcord and was mine! All 25lbs 10oz of her!

Safely photographed and returned, I sat down chuffed to bursting and realised I may have just found a little gem of a lake and definitely somewhere where I thought a bite or maybe two off the top would be possible for the floater article following week. The article was going to be a complete guide to floater fishing for Total Carp but with forecast overnight temperatures of just 3 degrees I was a little apprehensive to say the least. To see how it went you'll have to pick up a copy of the July and August editions!

I'm off to fish a new water over the next few days so I'll let you know how that goes next time, 'til then, tight lines.
