I have won a few matches this summer by using a floating feeder – and Sonubaits Fin Perfect Mix 1 Groundbait, mixed with fine bran, fished in conjunction with Sonubaits Oily Floaters, have done the damage.
The feeder is fashioned from one of the Preston Rocket feeders, minus the heavy weight welded on to the end.
I also glue some polystyrene to the feeder, using Araldite, to make it float, but the wire used to create the feeder cage is sufficient for casting, especially once loaded with groundbait.
I use a mix of two-thirds Mix 1 groundbait to one third bran, and I find that the bran particles hang really well in the surface layers, attracting fish and encouraging them to hang around looking for food particles.
I tie an 18-inch length of Preston Powerline in 0.17mm diameter, finished with a Preston PR36 hook in a size 16, with an 8mm Sonubaits Oily Floater hair-rigged to it. I pump the Oily Floaters in my pellet pump to extract some air, which makes them sink very slowly.
As a result, he bites are the usual savage ‘off-the-rest’ sort that carp give.
It’s an exciting style of fishing and is working well to fool carp which have wised up to the pellet waggler approach.
I use 6lb Korum reel line for my floating feeder approach, as the Korum line floats well, which is important.
The floating feeder works well in a ripple and also works effectively on flat calm days.
If your local fishery permits floating feeders, why not give my method a go. It is a really exciting way of fishing. Just be sure to hold on to your rod!
