spacer Back to Bream - Alan Stagg   4 OCTOBER 2010
spacer spacer spacer

With some good success on running water my thoughts soon turned to the large bream I had been targeting through the spring.  Looking back at my diary I fished 18 nights through this period without a bite from this tricky low stock water.  Not wanting to be beaten and knowing first hand how big the fish would be I just knew I had to return.

My first night back at the venue was a quick over night session on Saturday.  Arriving at the venue I found it to be busy but as luck would have it one of the main swims was free.  I soon had the brolly up and found a nice clear area at about 60 yards range.  After accurately depositing around 30 balls of Sonubaits F1 Groundbait with a good helping a F1 flavour, maggots and 4mm Elliptical pellets around the marker I soon had two baits positioned on the feed.

The night was quiet, like so many had been before until I was woken at first light by a fast take.  Before picking up the rod I knew a bream wasn’t going to be the culprit and the amount of line that was being stripped from the reel one of the lakes carp population had made a mistake.  After a good fight I was soon netting a nice mirror carp, which weighed 27lb 10oz.  Not the intended species but a nice bonus from this tricky pit.

I fished a further 11 nights in pursuit of the big bream, mainly over night sessions to start with then the session got longer but with little success.  Only four bream had been caught all year from what can only be described as one of the most difficult lakes I have fished to date.
