My name is Rinko Oosterveen and I was born and raised in Zwolle, Holland
This city is situated on the beautiful river IJssel, and it is on this river I have fished all my life. First coarse fishing with the feeder and since I caught my first barbel, I am now focused on these strong fish, the Barbus barbus became my passion. In the Netherlands the barbel population decreased enormously between 1945 and 1980 but is on the increase again since the early 1990s and in recent years it is also possible to target barbel in many of the larger Dutch rivers.
In 2007 I caught a new Dutch barbel record 85cm and 6.3 kilo
In the Netherlands we have the strange habit of measuring records in length, and not in weight. Don’t ask me why? Barbel fishing in the Netherlands is increasingly popular, the catches are getting better and better, also bigger and heavier by the way. In 2007 I started with setting up a barbel website because there was not much to be found on the Internet about barbel fishing in Holland. My website ‘The Dutch Barbel Site’ www.barbeel.com is designed to give information and to exchange the experiences of other barbel fishermen. In 2009 I managed to catch a new personal barbel record with the same length, but this fish was heavier than my previous Dutch record, new weight record: 6.9 Kilo.
